Most of us need no excuse to enjoy a daily dose of rich, dark chocolate. For us, there are simply few pleasures that can compare. But just in case you were starting to feel just a slight bit guilty, here’s some good news.
There is more and more evidence each day that seems to indicate that dark chocolate can aid in the prevention and cure of a number of ailments to include;
- High blood pressure

- Certain Cancers and Tumors
- Alzheimers
- Arteriosclerosis
Dark chocolate is high in Antioxidants. In fact, dark chocolate is higher in antioxidants than most fruits, vegetables and grains. It is the antioxidants in dark chocolate that make this ancient pleasure in many ways healthier than the apple.
To better understand how chocolate can be so good as well as so good for you we need to understand what an antioxidant is. Antioxidant may not be important except for the existence of what is known as “Free Radical,” so let’s start here.
In our bodies we have cells that are minus an electron. These cells are called “Free Radicals.” Because the free radicals are minus an electron, they move through our body attacking healthy cells, stealing electrons, consequently making those cells free radicals, and the beat goes on.
Here’s where Antioxidants come in. An antioxidant is a cell that has extra electrons. The antioxidant gives the free radicals the electron it needs, in effect neutralizing the free radical. Because antioxidants have extra electrons, it does not become a free radical when it gives electrons to the free radical.
It is the attack of the free radicals that contributes to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease as well as other diseases related to aging. The moral of the story is a diet high in antioxidants will neutralize those free radicals thereby slowing down the spread of disease.
The most common fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidants. This is why our parents told us to eat our fruits and vegetables, as we should. Now we know dark chocolate has twice the antioxidant value as an apple, as well as most other fruits and vegetables. Continue to eat the apple, but the real question is, “Have you had your dark chocolate today? “
